Borneo is Burning Logo Animation

Challenge: Create a logo that represents the crisis occurring in the Borneo rainforest that is located in both Malaysia and Indonesia—two countries that are profiting from deforestation, and so they will not stop causing destruction. There is torching of the rainforests to access valuable oil, loggers and poachers and, as a result, starvation and dying of orangutans, as well as other species, and humans hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

Solution: I first researched articles to gain insight of the activities occurring in Borneo. I next looked into photographs to gain a visual idea for inspiration. I found the orangutan is the number one most impacted species by deforestation and was inspired by the bigger picture (below) where we see interesting line patterns and burnt colors as a result of Borneo being burned down. The final result is an outline of an orangutan’s face filled in with multiple shades of green lines to represent the once lush Borneo forest, we then see this action of erasing these green lines to show Borneo is being deforested, and all we are left with is an empty orangutan to show both the orangutan and forest have been burned and killed.
